4 Common Floor Coverings and Their Advantages
Carpet
Carpet is the most common and generally the most cost-effective basement floor covering. Some of the advantages of carpet are:
- Low cost: good, durable carpet can cost between $20-26 a yard
- Colors galore
- The padding softens the concrete underneath
- The floor feels less cold than some other options
Tile
I love tile but it’s not for everyone. It’s hard and feels cold on bare feet. Especially in winter. I like it for style. You can really dress up a basement with a little strategically placed tile. Some of the advantage of tile:
- Can be cost-effective if you choose the right tile
- Looks really, really good
- Is very durable
- Easy to clean
Hardwood floors (standard & engineered)
Everyone loves hardwood floors. They look great. The only problem is there very expensive. They’re also very water sensitive. If your basement floods or you have a high water table, then this is not your best choice. The advantages of hardwood often outweigh the downside:
- Beautiful – most people wish they could include more hardwood in their home
- Style – this is the best way to make an average basement look like something special
- Wood feels great
- Many types of finishes & woods to choose from
Bamboo
Bamboo is a variant of hardwood with the added benefit of being a “green” product. Bamboo grows quickly and is very renewable.
- Takes a great finish
- Very durable
- Cost effective
- Green
